About the Board

The mission of the Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House is to restore, develop and operate the Vanderveer House property, significant in United States military history, as a nationally important historic site and an educational and community resource.

About the Board

There shall be a Board of Trustees which shall meet regularly to conduct official business:
To formulate and implement policies and plans and to raise and manage the funds necessary for this purpose.

Board Limitations

The Board of Trustees shall consist of not more than twenty four (24) Trustees, who must be individual members of The Friends, and shall include a representative of the Bedminster Township Committee and at least one and not more than two members of the Bedminster Township Historic Preservation Commission. The Trustees shall be elected at the Annual Meeting of the Friends.

Terms

Approximately one-third (1/3) of the membership of the Board of Trustees shall be elected each year for a term of 3 years. A full term of office begins with the installation at the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees held immediately following the Annual Meeting of The Friends.

Vacancies

A vacancy on the Board of Trustees shall be filled by the President with the approval of the Board of Trustees. Any Trustee so appointed shall hold office until the next succeeding Annual Meeting or until election of a successor.

Succession

No Trustee shall serve more than two (2) consecutive terms.

About the Vanderveer/Knox House & Museum
& the Pluckemin Artillery Cantonment

For over two centuries, the Jacobus Vanderveer House has been at the center of Bedminster Township’s rich and colorful history. The house is the last surviving building in Bedminster associated with the Vanderveer's, a family prominent in Bedminster Township history from its earliest settlement through the mid 19th century.

The Vanderveer house served as headquarters for General Henry Knox during the winter of 1778-79, when the Continental Army artillery was located in the village of Pluckemin during the Revolutionary War's Second Middlebrook Encampment. The house is the only known building still standing that was associated with the Pluckemin Artillery Cantonment. The artillery park and military academy is considered to be the first installation in America to train officers in engineering and artillery and predates the United States Military Academy at West Point (est.1802) by twenty four years.

The Vanderveer family house was later enlarged with two additions in the nineteenth century, remodeled in the twentieth century, and subsequently abandoned. The Township of Bedminster purchased the home and the surrounding area as part of River Road Park in 1989. The home has been restored by The Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House, a non-profit group of inspired volunteers dedicated to use the home as a museum and educational center.
