September 1, 2007 - Bedminster/Pluckemin - New archeological explorations underneath the JVH property to uncover footings of other historic buildings are part of a special lecture and tour planned for the Jacobus Vanderveer House Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14 as part of Somerset County’s “Weekend Journey Through the Past.”
Supporters of JVH and the public are encouraged to tour the House and hear a dynamic lecture on Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. on buried historic structures found on the property. Speakers include Jacobus Vanderveer House (JVH) consultant Ian Burrow of Hunter Research Inc. in Trenton and Dennis Bertland of Dennis Bertland Associates in Bloomsbury, who is writing the script for the exhibits in the JVH museum.
On Saturday, Oct. 13, Susa Miniman, an interior designer and member of the Friends board will present a lecture on women’s clothing, “From Bum Roll to Ballgown.” There will also be an exhibit/sale of colonial clothing, and Colony Farm Antiques will sell antiques of the period. Tassot Apiaries of Califon will demonstrate candle making.
JVH is one of 22 significant historic sites open for the weekend under the banner of the county’s Cultural & Heritage Commission. Admission is free. All sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. A senic route with driving directions has been prepared. Anyone visiting five or more of the participating sites during the weekend will be designated a “History Traveler” and will qualify for a free drawing. The prizes include: a dinner for two, a brunch for four, and an overnight stay at a hotel — all compliments of some of Somerset County’s fine hotels and restaurants. All details are available on the website: schistoryweekend.com. Don’t forget to bring your camera. Submit your best Weekend Journey photos of JVH, and you may win a prize!
