MISSION:

To restore, develop and operate the Jacobus Vanderveer House property, significant in United States military history, as a nationally important historic site and an educational and community resource. In order to achieve this mission, members of The Friends are conducting The Legacy Campaign, which will help fund the restoration, research, capital improvements and educational programming needed to preserve the Jacobus Vanderveer House. Please contact the Friends to contribute to the Legacy Campaign.

RESTORATION

The architectural significance of the Jacobus Vanderveer House stems largely from the amount of original fabric that remains: much of the flooring, walls, chair rails, mantels and paneling are nearly as they were in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Because the existing house retains a wealth of early and historically important material, the site is being restored to its circa 1813 appearance. It was then that the house reached its architectural apex. In interpreting the house to this period, no early material will be destroyed; however, alterations of the late 19th and early 20th centuries such as dormers, Victorian doors and the north porch will be removed.

RESEARCH

The Jacobus Vanderveer House has been at the center of numerous research studies, and the subject of much local legend. Additional architectural, archaeological and historical investigation will be needed to deepen our knowledge about the house, its occupants, colonial life, and the American Revolution. The more we learn, the better foundation we build for all future decisions regarding the house and its interpretation. Meeting that goal will require important financial commitment.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

The Friends will create a museum that interprets Pluckemin's significance in the American Revolution. When complete it will contain exhibits, period furnishings, office space, handicapped access, restrooms and storage for artifacts. The Jacobus Vanderveer House with its landscaped grounds will become a popular and important destination for local residents, children from throughout the state and all history minded visitors. These capital improvements will require significant additional funding.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING

Once restoration is complete, the Jacobus Vanderveer House will become an important link between Revolutionary War sites in Morristown and Somerville, chronicling the histories of Washington's winter encampments. The Friends look forward to the site's contribution to the Crossroads of the Revolution National Heritage Trail. Educational programs for school children, lecture series for adults, exhibits and special events will bring the Jacobus Vanderveer House back to life. Operating the museum on a daily basis will require ongoing public and private financial support.
