English boxwood swags, trees decorated with lush fruits and natural elements, and holiday décor by New Jersey’s most celebrated florists and interior designers mark the historic Jacobus Vanderveer House’s Colonial Christmas show house and tour Nov. 30, Dec. 1 and 2.

This is the fifth year for Colonial Christmas, and we will have a lot more space as we open our new Visitor Center/ Kitchen Wing. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. all three days. A cocktail party for patrons will take place on Friday evening, Nov. 30, and JVH event organizers are planning to have music and several fancy boutiques to make Christmas shopping easy.

Proceeds from the Christmas Tour will help fund the interactive exhibits and furnishings for the museum, which plans to open sometime in 2008. For the tour, the rich Dutch colonial interior of the house will be decorated in Christmas trimmings of the times, with natural greens, berries, pinecones, and fruits predominating. Mantelpieces will be brimming with garlands wrapped with glass beads and silk ribbonry. Antique furniture from local antique shops will dress the rooms.

Eight Interior Decorators to Design & Showcase Various Rooms

Coordinating the designers will be board member Susan L. Miniman of SLM Design & Interiors in Lebanon Township.

Jim Cline of Jim Cline Interiors in Bridgewater and President of the Friends of Jacobus Vanderveer House will decorate the new Kitchen Wing and Visitors Center in celebration of our opening .

First floor designers: Sandra McDonald of Sandra John Interiors, Inc. in Basking Ridge, will decorate the downstairs entry hall; John D. Colligan of Pereaux in Morristown, will decorate the parlor; Katja van der Loo of Papyrus Home Design Inc. in Boonton, will decorate the 1813 room; Sagri Frieber of Accents by Design in Bedminster, will decorate the main gallery room, and Nancy Mikulich of NLM Design Interiors in Bernardsville will design the first floor General Henry Knox office.

Upstairs, Robin Conners of Favourite Finds in Martinsville will do the bed chamber, and Susan L Miniman of SLM Design & Interiors will showcase the rare tea set that belonged to the family of General Henry Knox in the adjoining room.

Holiday Boutique

Several well known floral vendors will participate selling holiday themed designer floral arrangements for home and table. Boutiques will sell items for holiday entertaining, gifts, toys, chocolates, jewelry, women’s fashion accessories, handbags, and wrapping paper.

Santa will be there for Kids and Parents

There will be music of the period on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. and caroling by a school choir on Sunday. Santa will greet children and their parents both days. In keeping with the early history of the house, Santa will be dressed for a traditional Dutch Christmas.

About the Vanderveer/Knox House & Museum
& the Pluckemin Artillery Cantonment

For over two centuries, the Jacobus Vanderveer House has been at the center of Bedminster Township’s rich and colorful history. The house is the last surviving building in Bedminster associated with the Vanderveer's, a family prominent in Bedminster Township history from its earliest settlement through the mid 19th century.

The Vanderveer house served as headquarters for General Henry Knox during the winter of 1778-79, when the Continental Army artillery was located in the village of Pluckemin during the Revolutionary War's Second Middlebrook Encampment. The house is the only known building still standing that was associated with the Pluckemin Artillery Cantonment. The artillery park and military academy is considered to be the first installation in America to train officers in engineering and artillery and predates the United States Military Academy at West Point (est.1802) by twenty four years.

The Vanderveer family house was later enlarged with two additions in the nineteenth century, remodeled in the twentieth century, and subsequently abandoned. The Township of Bedminster purchased the home and the surrounding area as part of River Road Park in 1989. The home has been restored by The Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House, a non-profit group of inspired volunteers dedicated to use the home as a museum and educational center.
